Earth Day Planting
Hi!
I wanted to see if you could get the word out there regarding the start of a few beautification projects that I hope to roll out in our neighborhood this year (the first hopefully for Earth Day) and I also am looking for volunteers to help out in a variety of roles.
I wanted to see if you could get the word out there regarding the start of a few beautification projects that I hope to roll out in our neighborhood this year (the first hopefully for Earth Day) and I also am looking for volunteers to help out in a variety of roles.
One of the projects is taking over the medians that block some of the intersections and landscape them as neighbors in the same manner as the Buddha garden at the intersection of E 19th Avenue and 11th Avenue. I have my eye on the one at E 20th and 12th Avenue and I know there are others. We would like to landscape at least one of these for Earth Day on the Weekend of April 20/21. What I need is for someone at one of these intersection to act as the lead and be a block captain in the surrounding block to drop fliers in mailboxes and speak to neighbors to get their contact info, tell them the date and get them to show up on planting day. Once emails are collected from neighbors I can coordinate from there. We'll also have a potluck afterwards to celebrate the new planted space(s).
The other project I need block captains for to do outreach to neighbors upfront is landscaping of the sidewalk strips between the sidewalk and the street curbs. We can plant trees (do the appropriate approval from the City) and also plant drought tolerant plants in the spaces and then fill the top with decomposed granite which will keep the weeds out and the moisture in. We've done this in San Francisco many times and it transforms a block when it is all nicely landscaped and maintained. And my partner, Josh, is a landscape designer so he will work with each neighbor to design a garden that needs minimal water (like once a week) and little maintenance free of charge. We will remove cement in the spaces where new gardens can be placed but most homes already have areas ready to plant. We will be working with a non profit that plants city trees for a reduced price to bring down the cost where we plant trees

"Feet on the Street"
Neighbors are walking the streets to make our presence better known. We leave flyers at homes with no lights turned on to encourage them to keep them on all night.
We meet every Wed eve, usually between 7:30 and 8pm at the Leaning Tower of Pizza, 498 Wesley Ave (between Brooklyn Ave & Newton Ave).
Vests will be issued to 3 time participants and safety whistles to those giving the activity a try for the first time. Two and four legged walkers of any age are welcome. It's a great way to meet neighbors and get a little exercise.

Trunk or Treat
You've got less than three weeks to plan your TRUNK OR TREAT costume!
What:
TRUNK OR TREAT is a safe place for neighborhood families to come trick or treat on Halloween! Create a costume for yourself AND your car, then host a trick-or-treating trunk in the parking lot of Regeneration Church, corner of E. 15th St. and 3rd Ave.
When:
October 31st, 5:30-9:30
How The Lake Neighbors Help:
TRUNKS! The more fun trunks the more fun the kids will have. Bat Man and the Bat Mobile, Scooby Doo and the Mystery Van, spider webs, flashing lights, let loose and get creative!
To participate as a Trunk, contact ken@regenerationweb.com
MASKS! Every kid should be able to dress up for Halloween, so the Lake Neighbors sponsors a mask-making table to make sure everyone gets in the spirit. We need at least four volunteers to man the mask-making table.

"It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood":
~ Safety Walk and Social ~
and we'd like YOU to be a part of it!
Here are the details:
When: Friday, Feb. 25th, 4-7pm
Locations:
Woody's Cafe (Pre- and Post- "Safety Walk")
Lakeshore @ Wesley Avenue (on the Lake side)
Corner of E 18th and Park Blvd
Corner of E 18th and 14th Ave.*
Corner of Park Blvd. & MacArthur Blvd (by H.S.)*
*(Please note - there is some flexibility regarding these locations and we are open to other areas if we have enough people to support it).
The Concept:
We will form at least four "Pods" that will be "stationed" at the different locations in order to pass on community support and information on how folks can be safe, have the info and numbers they need and what support is available to them in the community .
At 4pm: At least one or two people from each pod would head to Woody's Cafe on Park Blvd. at to gather up an assortment of whistles, safety brochures, Lake Neighbors Postcards and other items to be handed out, and bring them to their Pod Locations.
From ~4:30-~5:30: the pods will hang out at and walk around the designated locations handing out the whistles, Safety Brochures and other information and engaging in conversation with our fellow neighbors to create a positive, safe presence.
~5:30/6pm: everyone is welcome to celebrate a Job Well Done and head to Woody's for a social hour with hot chocolate and treats, hosted by Woody's and the Lake Neighbors!
Where you come in: We'd love it if you would:
Sign up to volunteer with us and be a part of one of the PODs for this event.
Encourage your friends and neighbors to sign up by passing this e-mail on to them!
Spread the word to any local meetings or businesses that you are a part of and help make this event a success!

Multi-generational Lion Dancers from the Lincoln Square Recreation Center’s Cultural Arts Program
in collaboration with the Rising Dragon Cultural Arts Program launch the walk with leaders from

The Lincoln Music Stars from Cantare Children’s Choirs and Lincoln Elementary School will entera-
tain the growing crowd as educators, parents and youth advocates join the walk. Lincoln Elementa-
ry School has been home to new immigrants in Oakland for more than 100 years. This year it earned
the coveted national Blue Ribbon Award, awarded to only 304 outstanding schools across the coun-
try in recognition of high academic achievement.
9:20 am Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts--1428 Alice Street
The beautifully restored turn-of-the century building formerly known as the Alice Arts Center, is
one of the area’s busiest performing arts facilities. Instructors from residential dance companies
CaribelinQ and Dance-A-Vision will lead quick Salsa and hip-hop lessons. Performing artists and
others from Oakland’s thriving arts community are invited to join the walk.
9:40 am Stopwaste.org--1537 Webster Street
In recognition of the Mayor-Elect’s leadership as the former Chair of Stopwaste.org and the
Alameda County Waste Management Authority, leaders from Oakland’s environmental, green jobs
and bicycling community will join the walk from one of Oakland’s first Green Point-rated LEED®
facilities.
9:50 am SOBO Merchant District-- 17th & Webster
Support of local business is a key element in Mayor-Elect Jean Quan’s economic development
program. The walk will pass one of downtown’s vibrant local merchant blocks.
10:00 am The Leamington--1814 Franklin Street
Mayor-Elect Quan’s grandfather was a union cook at this historic former luxury hotel. Today it is a
modern office space. The Drill Team from the International Longshoreman Workers Union (ILWU)
will lead a contingent of labor leaders as they join the growing group of walkers.
10:20 am The Fox Oakland Theater--1807 Telegraph Avenue
When The Fox Oakland Theater opened its doors in 1928, it was considered one of the most modern
and beautiful of movie theaters of its time. One of the biggest draws was the massive domed theater
itself, an opulent and exotic mix of terra cotta tiles, dizzingly detailed paintings and golden deities,
reminiscent of a Brahmin Temple. Today it serves as a live music venue and home to the adjacent
Oakland School of the Arts and the lively Uptown nightlight and arts community. Students from the
Prescott Circus will entertain the crowds as they wait to enter the theater for the Official
Inauguration Ceremony, which begin promptly at 11 am.

THE OUTDOOR MOVIE SCHEDULE
We have 3 Lakeneighbor Outdoor Movie Nights all lined up...(location is Regeneration Church parking lot on corner of E.15th St. & 3rd Ave.)

Saturday, September 25th (Movie: either Galaxy Quest or possibly if we can manage it, How To Tame Your Dragon if it is available by then)
To make things simple, we agreed to make our outdoor movies fall on every last Saturday of the month through September. SO...this means we have our next one on July 31st...movie starts when the sun goes down, but get there early to get a good spot. bring a chair, and friends and whatever you want in terms of movie food (for yourself or to share)...it is a great time and a great chance to meet more of your neighbors. As always, Regeneration Church is an amazing neighbor and generously and unconditionally allows us to use their space and also a lot of their equipment!!!!! Thank you

June 5th "Town Funk" Block Party from 12 noon to 5pm -- has evolved into a pretty dynamic event. Make sure you drop by -- free food, BBQ, local artists & musicians...great music - a tribute to Michael Jackson for part of it...over on Park Street next to Woody's (across from The Parkway).

Oakland Running Festival
OAKLAND RUNNING FESTIVAL
On March 28, thousands of runners will hit to the streets of Oakland to participate in the Inaugural Oakland Running Festival. This new event features the first marathon in our city in more than 25 years, a half-marathon, four-person team relay, 5k and a kids' fun run. In addition, there will be a free health and fitness expo and celebration village.
The course will circumvent its way through our fair city and will give runners a unique view of Oakland.
If you aren't a runner, you can still participate as a volunteer or stand out on the course and cheer on the runners as they run past you.
This event will be a boon to our city's economy and is great way for citizens to show their pride in Oakland.

Facilitates youth in leadership roles engaging their peers in healthy eating and nutrition discussions through fruit and vegetable sampling. Connecting small farmers to urban communities via the creation of farm stands and farmers markets in local establishments.
People's Grocery is a community-based organization in West Oakland that develops creative solutions to the health problems in our community that stem from a lack of access to and knowledge about healthy, fresh foods. Our mission is to build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the West Oakland community.
Middle school students from Oakland School for the Arts will be selling the
East Bay Eco Metro Guide , a fundraiser for the school and a great resource for local groceries, Farmers Markets, and CSA's. One lucky raffle winner will win a free Eco Metro Guide!
Earth Box - Our maintenance-free, award-winning, high-tech growing system controls soil conditions, eliminates guesswork and more than doubles the yield of a conventional garden-with less fertilizer, less water and virtually no effort.
Funk Town Farm - We are Funk Town Farm, a community garden located in the area known to locals as “funk town” in East Oakland. The garden was started in 2008 behind 219 East 15th Street at 3rd Avenue and two blocks up from Lake Merrit.
Regeneration Church - Regeneration Church has graciously offered its building for this community event. Regeneration is a group of believers in Jesus Christ who desire peace, well being, and opportunity for the people of Oakland. Regen believes in caring for creation and caring for its neighbors and is active in improving its neighborhood through community gardening, feeding the homeless, Tae Kwon Do classes for youth, and supporting neighborhood groups.

On February 20th I am hosting a concert in Oakland, and we're trying to get as many folks out as possible. The Green Youth Art & Media Center

We are excited to announce the grand opening of Oakland's Green Youth Arts & Media Center, 2781 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland. We welcome our communities to please join us on Thursday January 14th, 2010, at 5:00pm for our inaugural celebration with a reception to follow.
The Green Youth Arts & Media Center is a creative empowerment hub in Oakland that houses the Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Academy, and is a collaboration between Art in Action, Grind for the Green, Colored Ink and the Community Rejuvenation Project.
We stand in homage to Oakland’s history of community movements, and we celebrate each of your contributions to this legacy. The Center supports personal, professional, economic, and community development. We seek to nurture our existing relationships, while also cultivating new ones. We hope to strengthen Bay Area networks as we continue to advance this work together.
