Lake Peeps Quarterly Schedule 2011

Hi Lake Neighbors!!!

Well, I got a very strong positive response about changing the format of how we meet and what we do. SO...with the group "okay", here is what it looks like. We need to work on building our calendar for the year, so the calendar is in rough draft -- give your input and ideas.

1) We will officially have 4 quarterly meetings which will be held on the THIRD THURSDAY in January, April, July & October (January 20th, April 21st, July 21st & October 20th) from 6 to 8pm. Please mark those down and do all you can to be there...with fewer meetings it is much easier to make the exceptions in scheduling to make it work. We will try to have dinner donated by a local business on those 4 nights. I will give you an update on that part (the food), the location & reminder for the meeting closer to that date.

I still want to keep encouraging e-participation all the time regardless -- it is a strong part of what we do. If you aren't at meetings, you do still live here and your voice, input and opinion are important.

2) We will continue emailing info as needed of updates & responses/info, but we may use a suggestion given about using a more interactive online format -- possibly tied into our website (http://www.fierceface.com/lakeneighbors/index.html)? This is something that I am not an expert at, if you can help make that happen it would be very appreciated.

3) Events events events... we want to get that going a little more regularly. This means the events crew probably will need more people on board. Currently it is Betsy and Skye, who are amazing, but with events all year long it will be a lot. Are you interested in helping out with them? How it works is normally an event is presented by someone and the crew helps it come into being.

4) DO SOMETHING each month for this neighborhood and let us all know big or small what that is – we have about 240 people now organized (with regular drop off from moving & etc. this has been steadily growing). Think about what that would look like if all of us did something proactive every month at minimum. We live here, it makes no sense not to, right?

SEND YOUR IDEAS AND WHAT YOU DO FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD! We plan to add in some events at the New Parkway a few times thoughout the year, but we don't have those dates yet. There are also some art shows and also some other events from Steve Ma with Woody's and the LMBA that we are waiting for dates/info to add in. PLEASE send your ideas or additions. Also, let us know if you want to get involved with any of the existing events. Here are the ROUGH FIRST DRAFT of what we have sofar for our

2011 Lake Neighbors calendar:

JANUARY: Meeting Thursday the 20th 6-8pm
FEBRUARY Valentines Day block party (late) breakfast BBQ (Sunday 2/13) on E.17th Street (between 3rd & 4th Ave's)
MARCH: Spring cleaning in the neighborhood day (TBA)
APRIL: Meeting Thursday the 21st 6-8pm
MAY
JUNE
JULY: Meeting Thursday the 21st 6-8pm
AUGUST
SEPTEMBER (Outdoor movie TBA)
OCTOBER: Meeting Thursday the 20th 6-8pm, Halloween's Trunk or Treat @ Regeneration Church.
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER (on the 31st the annual progressive dinner in various houses for NY Eve)

Thank you! See you a lot around! Hopefully for New Years Eve when we have 2nd annual house-to-house (progressive) celebration.

Much Friendship,

Sasha

a new idea...what do you think?

SO. . .Think about this. . .we have 238 neighbors in this email circle. . .

We have far more e-participation than we have in-person at our meetings (which can have anywhere from 3 to 30 show). I am proposing a new format that will keep us still in physical contact with eachother but will change the face to face meeting to a lower frequency (quarterly). Our events and projects will keep us in contact on a more-than-monthly basis.

The big thing from this that will keep us active and moving in our projects is this. . .since we have so many people who stay involved via email (while a lot of people come to meetings, I get a lot more of response from some people whom have never been to a meeting) -- I want to send out a monthly letter/question checking in and asking that every one of us -- all 238 (yeah, I know it is idealistic, but so?!) -- say one or two things they feel is important to have everyone else hear or think about. An offer, a question, a concern, an idea, an event, a proposed project calling out for a group to help make it come through.

The regular people assigned to projects can update in that email question letter, too.

We give a few days to respond (I will have a date) and I will send a 2nd letter with everyone's info honed down for us all to be informed of.

I think it would be worth it to find a few people in touch with non-emailing people to get their voice heard -- also the homeless people living here. Dave Kim who does our outreach may have some good ideas on who can represent for the homeless people because they connect with so many homeless through their church -- others receiving this email may be a great resource -- speak up if you want to be that point person.

If we do this right and if you all respond even more then this could be a very active group in this format. Can you imagine what we could get done if ALL 238 respond and get active?!

Our presenters can come to the quarterly meetings and can always give us info to distribute via email if it is a time issue. ALSO, it was suggested (we discussed this in our last meeting last night) that we meet a little longer than our usual 1 hour.

We need to really set our annual/monthly events so we all can plan and we need a few more people on our events crew so we don’t overwhelm Besty and Skye (Betsy is having a baby soon, so she will really appreciate a bigger crew).

SO. . .

Monthly email question/answer & update
Monthly events
Quarterly in-person meetings, 2 hours and a potluck (January, April, July & October) (possibly on the first Tuesday or Sunday of those months)

OHTER ideas you have to brainstorm and improve on this new format, please give them!

Hope you are great.

MUCH friendship!!!,

Sasha

Our neighbors are so great! We spent the day together cleaning up Funk Town farm and giving the chicken coop a new roof!

Post Mtg Notes

Hi Lake Neighbors!!!

Okay, here is our update on the most recent meeting for LakeNeighbors that happened on Tuesday (9/28)…we are up to over 230 people nowadays, FYI. The meetings do not always reflect that, so don't be too worried about that. Meetings can have anywhere from 30 to 3 people showing up. There are many that are e-participants and that is valued also.

First, our next meeting is on 10/17, which is a Sunday. Place is TBA, but it will be at one of the usual places. (The next few that follow so you can plan (!) are: 11/9, 11/28 & 12/21 – all at 6:30 as usual!)

We had guests – 3 of them to be exact. All very interesting.

Guest 1…Walgreens came in with a great showing of their leadership ready to restart our relationships with them as neighbors. They gave us some details about the security they have in place in their rebuilt store…they have double the security standards than their other stores. Their cameras have night vision and varied angles…they have a store greeter that will keep check on the whole store and parking lot (tours all premises). They keep camera footage for somewhere between 20-60 days. They are pursuing a liquor license, but will not sell singles (single bottles from a six pack) and they not be selling spirits – only wine and beer. There is a new manager Michael Beamer – Francisco is still the community contact in another store now. Gorman Moy, their N. Bay District Manager and Destry Prescott in charge of recovering loss and loss prevention came to the meeting with Perry from the Lakeshore store. THEIR GRAND RE-OPENING WILL BE OCTOBER 9TH, SATURDAY in the late AM (roughly planned from 11 to 2 or so – more on that when it is set). They gave us the green light for starting our garden up again! They are unable to pitch directly in to more cameras off of their property, but are very open to being approached about plans we design case by case to see if they can be a support. Walgreens really makes an effort to really consider things from a community/neighbor perspective in how they interact and communicate with us, which is always appreciated.

Guest 2: Greg Clester from Metwest High school – seeking organizations/businesses that can host their students as interns on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Metwest has a strong mentorship program and a very active, hands on curriculum. They are right in our neighborhood and have grades 9-12. If you are interested in providing internship opportunities you can reach him at 510 435-6115. We can also provide internships as the Lake Neighbors, we would need to have regular time we can offer working with them. For some of our bigger projects this could really be interesting for them and for us. We could even have someone in charge of youth leadership with Lake Neighbors who could run that. Let me know if you are interested in talking about that. He pitched yes on measure L to help with funding for Metwest.

Guest 3…America Works also came, represented by Frank Davis. AW has a contract with the city of Oakland under measure Y addressing crime prevention. They provide a wide array of employment opportunities to people ages 18-35 recently released from incarceration and are on parole or probation. This ties into our project focusing on healing the cause as well as with people we personally love and care about. Frank also mentioned that Measure BB is a continuation of Measure Y. For more info contact Frank Davis @ 510 891-9100.

Hoang has been coming to our meetings regularly which is very nice – she has a lot of info on everything and more specifically for this meeting she spoke about neighborhood improvements and also gave us some grant info – is there anyone out there that would like to take that on as a service (grantwriting) for Lake Neighbors?

There were a few more announcements here and there, but we really ran out of time after our guests shared and did Q&A. If anyone is interested in finding out what is happening down at the end of the lake where all that construction/destruction is going on, check out info on Measure DD (I was told to find measureDD.com, but that led me into Oaklandnet where there was info there).

Hope you are all great! See you out in the neighborhood and at the next meeting!

UPCOMING MTGS & EVENTS

NEXT MEETINGS: Tuesday 11/9 at RE:GEN& Sunday 11/28. All meetings begin at 6:30pm and end at 7:30pm. Locations TBA, just wanted you to be able to mark your calendars.

Safety REMINDERS

Hi! A few things...

ONE -- our next meeting is tomorrow (THIS Tuesday, 9/28) over at Regeneration Church on the corner of E. 15th St. & 3rd Ave. at 6:30p. We have 3 guests: Walgreens, America Works & MetWest High School. All these address big points on our projects regarding safety, connectedness and restorative justice. Make sure to be there!

TWO -- A neighbor wrote me about hearing a whistle blown repeatedly out in the neighborhoood and wanted to confirm we are still using those as a way to communicate that we need help and I want to just reiterate that we have not made any changes to that. The OPD also thinks it is a good idea. It is distinctly different from yelling or screaming, so make sure to also check when you hear whistles blowing!!

THREE -- this reminds me that I am supposed to send out our established safety list of procedures we came up with last year during the holiday spike in crime. PLEASE look it over and add you input, suggestions, changes, concerns. It is below.

Have a great day & see you at the meeting and around the neighborhood!
Sasha (READ BELOW! )

The simultaneous three pronged approach is what we are using to address the safety problems here. They are: 1) IMMEDIATE SAFETY ISSUE, 2) STRONG ONGOING POSITIVE EVENTS, 3) HEALING THE CAUSE INSTEAD OF TREATING THE SYMPTOM BY CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE BEING CAUGHT IF POSSIBLE.

Groups like the "wolf pack" mugging people here unfortunately has a effective strategy, they make hits all at once all over w/a driver, they sometimes fan out on a street and always wear black hoodies (remember not all black hoodies mean a threat…we all probably have one, but our assessment skills are good). They target anyone – mostly elderly and even an entire family (searched the kids, too)…we go into the safety issue first…

1) IMMEDIATE SAFETY ISSUE:

* Use Whistle instead of yelling for help because it is more recognizable (OPD knows this)

* Tell all neighbors when you hear a whistle it means distress/need of help

* Start Night hikes with groups of 4 or more (healthy to walk and is meant to be fun and vigilant)

* Get walkie-talkies on your block (we use ch. 9)

* Meet your Neighbors on your block minimum (beyond is great)

* Eye contact and greet everyone around

* Offer bathroom stops for people working here to help us – Guardian Angels are around

* Approach, introduce and meet the police that are in our neighborhoods.

* Look at all cars around you when you are out – make sure they are empty

* Multiple males in black hoodies are the recent group – so be awake and aware.

* Walkie talkie noise is somewhat of a deterrent when you are out

* Sometimes saying what is up/hi is going to make you not selected for a crime…walking with fear or

distracted is more likely to attract a problem

* When calling dispatch say you’re calling about the series of robberies (it is prioritized)

ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WHEN GIVING DESCRIPTIONS to be more specific about clothing details and

license plate and not general ethnic info because that often just ends up getting a lot of innocent neighbors

traumatized who are going about their day.

* Call someone, leave line open & tell your location, if you are out & being approached (they can call,

and a robbery in process is prioritized)

* If robbed, cooperate fully – your stuff is not worth the risk.

* If robbed, leave your cards and cell active long enough for OPD to track them

* If robbed, take as much specific detail in visually as you can to recall later to OPD

* Get cell #’s of your own block neighbors (put in ph as “NBR Lateef” etc.)

* “Phone tree” w/ your block to call incidents in – higher priority with more calls in

* Cover tagging right away every time

* If something is happening & dispatch may be slow or no, call 3 neighbors and decide what

to do together (min of 3)

* When calling OPD emergency dispatch (510 777-3211) if you give your name, this up’s priority

* CALL CALL CALL in everything – it may add to something later, it will be noted one way or other

response at times is immediate, and at times not at all – but do it anyway.

* Use luggage tag on your keys for id/bank card and don’t carry purse/bag when possible

* We will invite lead for city ofc in charge of streetlights to correct our situation of dim/no lighting

* We asked to be made a “project” by patrols so they can work continuously on our issue

Sean was looking into organizing great design/art on the always tagged PG&E boxes -- not sure what happened to that project, but it is still a good one (Pat Kernighan was looking into that for him last year?).

We want to find some Lake Neighbors to go to other neighborhood meetings to connect us all up more. Maybe Hoang can help make this easier.

There are currently no set hours at OPD’s auxillary office at Lucky’s (people were wondering).

WHAT WE WANT FROM THE OPD:

1) Great respect when questioning/approaching people -- there is no reason why this can't be done with respect and an attitude that apologizes for the interruption, that is kind and reassuring. It is intimidating even being asked. Forget the "dusting off" policy that can follow an inquiry -- make sure there is a good dialog all along, good approach, good dialog with respect requires no dusting off. We know there are OPD that already do this, but we need ALL officers to keep this as the constant operating standard.

2) Better consistency of fast response for dangerous incidents that are called in

(ie: burglaries in process, suspects in this recent wave seen in action, etc.).

3) Follow up and responsiveness to our burglaries/robberies when we call to find out.

4) OPD increase use of Lucky’s Auxillary office (we can help you have internet to helpt this)

5) Please ask your officers to meet us when they are on patrol. Be out of the vehicle -- know us, know who we are who live here in a good way. Reach out and make the effort (greet, introduce).

Foot patrol?

6) Please inform us about the latest arrests and changes in our area.

7) OPD come to meetings -- plain clothes and off duty is great, too.

Questions: Is OPD checking ATM camera’s for the stolen ATM cards that are being used after muggings? What do you advise when we see a spread out group of males in black hoodies walking the entire width/span of the street/sidewalk on a street? Can we have the regular beat officers (not just the PSO’s) come out of their cars so we can see them – we see them, but in motion in vehicles.

3) STRONG POSITIVE EVENTS…

We have many going. We have a continuous flow of great art exhibits and gigs and goings on in many different forms. We have the outdoor movies, “happy hour” (at one persons front steps so we meet people walking by), BBQ’s, pie party, a word fast party, garden work day, progressive dinner parties, valentines pancake block party in PJ's, community gardening, art shows, movie/documentary showings, rafting trips, neighborhood clean up, someone put together a guerilla cake fight that actually got rained out – but the ideas are boundless – be creative or be basic – anything is great). We have many ideas to grow and we need to have many people take this on and spread the active part. We have event's coordinators now who can help make anything happen.

2) HEALING THE CAUSE:

We have a varied range of great and talented and good hearted people who are long standing members of this group who a great deal of experience working with youth and adults who have gotten into some really dangerous places and we want to work hard to meet them and get to know them and they get to know us. Lately we have had several new people attending that are expressing great interested in that approach. We must do that, we all agree – that is one of the prongs in our 3 pronged approach. We are pursuing this by approaching 2 programs in particular and also the DA’s office. We can seek being a part of restitution for people (youth and adults) arrested for crimes in this area. I recently found 2 people willing to really head this project up and 3 that want to get involved in making this get someplace strong. If you are wired for this and interested, just speak up and get involved.

Proactively start something and there are several of us that will support that cause/action. Which of the prongs are you going to take some action on? Organizing this group and all this momentum took a great deal of effort and persistence to make happen, support it and bring up your most passionate cause in this. This group is not a place for judgment – it is a wonderful place because it is accepting of all our differences and varying gifts and efforts.

FROM A PAST EMAIL FOLLOWING UP ON THE SUBJECT…

We never want to forget our main focus to improve the area, is our positive community building efforts with great events and meetings all the time. Please add in your own events and lets keep that growing. If the OPD or city can help connect us with some of the taggers that get caught and we can meet them and work with them to make things look better around here with murals or any vast number of great things the artists in this area can create. We have so many artists, it would be great to make that obvious by driving around and seeing creations from the people who live here with signs or ?

We talked about some strategies we can use in the mean time. If there is something of concern you can call it in – also you can call all the neighbors (get their cell #’s, make sure several of you have walkie-talkies if that is easier – we are using channel 90, by the way.) …and if you have 3 neighbors then consider ways to safely approach and address the problem. Always be mindful that there can be a weapon or a person who may be violent/unstable. Don’t go deal with it on your own. Try to maintain a rule of 3. A citizens arrest is always our right to do – with enough of us, we can detain someone (sit on them, handcuffs, whatever that is safe enough) until the police can get there – BY THE WAY I think that would also qualify a fast response time if we are in that situation because of the threat/risk.

So, other than being always vigilant, calling in suspicious things, calling in 3 neighbors minimum, then beyond that we are talking about adding cameras to the wireless internet we have. There is free wireless internet for all Lake Neighbors that can get the signal and we are slowly working on increasing the signal – anyone wanting to join in can add a camera to the area outside their home, we number that camera so you or anyone can just get online and view that space. It can also record certain things that may end up being helpful in catching and stopping some of this.

Take self defense (not just martial arts) – girlarmy was a resource given here in Oakland that is good for women.

We want to pursue putting signs up telling about the video surveillance (the OPD says we can put signs up where we want to and that we can also do that thru City Planning…).

Put up lights that have movement sensors so that more places are less ideal for bad events.

The Conference at Work: WhistleStop

by Joanne Howard

WhistleStop is a committee and program of HPKCC. For members who are unfamiliar with the program it was brought to the Conference by Ross Lathrop in the early 1970s. This program is an action-safety program that provides each resident of our community with a practical way to protect themselves and their neighbors on the street.

Essentially, a person purchases a whistle and carries it with them. If you see suspicious activity or need to protect yourself or a neighbor from physical harm, you can signal for help by blowing your whistle. Members of the Hyde Park-Kenwood community understand the meaning of the whistle and will gravitate towards the direction of the sound.

People who perpetrate unlawful acts want to do so in silence. The WhistleSTOP program is a "blow" to their attempt to commit such an act in silence.

Please visit our Web site at www.hydepark.org. Or simply call the office (773-288-8343) and we will get one to you. We look forward to getting a whistle in your hands.

August Mtg Notes

Hi Lake Neighbors!

MAN, it has been a while since I have written one of these – it’s been way too busy and I think a lot of us are just taking care of everything in our lives and keeping connected as much as we can and it is tough to put the new things into action, but let’s get re-motivated or more motivated and keep things going in this great direction. Since last communicated we have had a few meetings, National Night Out, an outdoor movie…what am I forgetting? If you want to host or organize something…connect with Betsy and Skye and they can help make it happen.

NEXT MEETINGS: Tuesday 8/17, Sunday 9/5, Tuesday 9/28, Sunday 10/17, Tuesday 11/9 & Sunday 11/28. All meetings begin at 6:30pm and end at 7:30pm. Locations TBA, just wanted you to be able to mark your calendars.

Walgreens is re-opening in September. They have let us know that they are ready to get connected up with us and will attend some of our meetings and pull together regarding safety and also about keeping us able to use the extra unused land they have for a community garden. Since the access is very limited now with the remodel, we may just have the residents who share a fence with them manage it? Not sure how to handle that, but we will certainly find good solutions. We can brainstorm on things that we can grow there that don’t need to be cooked so it can support our neighbors without roofs. The other thing we were thinking about was seeing if we could have chickens there? Anyway…lots to talk about with that.

The last meetings had some subjects come up, I will bullet point them:

· Add to the website: businesses that neighbors offer/ads

· Starting a farmers market in the Regen Parking lot (on E. 15th St.& 3rd Ave.) for the overflow of local farmers who could not get a booth in the Lake Merritt Farmers market on Saturdays – maybe on a weeknight?

· We may look at adding twitter as a way of communicating, Nico will write up a concise, simple how-to. This would not be a replacement of what we do, but an addition for those interested. We already have email, phones, walkie talkies…

· We lost 80 OPD (which is why we also lost our PSO’s because they went back into patrol). Patrol is prioritized, so cuts were more in the investigations departments, etc. and there is a big threat of an additional 120 being cut now, too. We need to see where this stands now – and if it is still imminent we must get super activated.

· We need ways to connect with the Asian community here and it was specifically noted that we need ways of connecting with Chinese and Vietnamese speaking neighbors. We have several Spanish speaking neighbors involved and active. Next is to find out what their concerns and wishes and ideas are and make sure we all work to make things go the way we all envision and wish for.

· EVERYONE assigned to a project, please email me your updates if you are not able to attend meetings so we can keep things moving along…

· Capt. Figueroa of OPD wrote area 2 a letter which we read aloud…mostly about being vigilant, calling in…also about using surveillance equipment and also that he is attending community meetings as much as possible so we will hopefully be seeing him at one of our meetings. He recommended a link to check out (www.oaklandnet.com/government/o/OPD/o/pPatrolDivision/DOWD005615) but I could not get his exact given link to work. Oaklandnet does work, though, so you can start there?

· OPD wants license plates and basic model of vehicles when you are reporting crimes, also, strangely – shoes are the most distinctive article of clothing people wear, so note details about the shoes.

· Outdoor movies will be the last Saturday of the month thru September (we have 8/28 and 9/25 left)

· The subject of problem liquor stores came up again, and some discussion around this and addressing underage drinking, etc. Andy emailed me with this right after the meeting:

“ Here is the phone # to report problem liquor stores, stores that sell to underage people. Stores that allow drug dealing on their property. Stores that drag the neighborhood down. Stores that are the OPPOSITE of Sybil's. Stores like Jax.Sometimes, you leave a message, sometimes a person answers. When you call, state your complaints, give the adress (502 Foothill 94606). Complaints can be anonymous. All complaints are investigated, & the more complaints they hear, the more they want to deal with them so that they do not have to hear more complaints.Jax is on the razor's edge. One more underage violation & the place loses its license, & Oakland rezones the building no alcohol for all eternity.” (the ph# is missing! I will forward it out when I get it from him).

Okay, that is it for now. Thank you for reading…write back thoughts and responses and ideas if you can’t make the meetings…but try to make the meetings!

...this in from our now former PSO (Problem Solving Officer from the OPD) FYI...he has been very good to us...I know a lot of you know him, so thought I'd send it along.

Hey Sasha and the Lake Peeps,

Unfortunately the PSO unit was disbanded and I am no longer the PSO for beat 15X. I have been reassigned and am now working as a Patrol officer in Area 1.

It truly has been an honor being able to serve you and the people of beat 15X. It is because of people like you and the Lake Neighbors Group putting in your personal time and effort who have made a significant difference in the crime rate, and are making Oakland a better place to live. Please let everyone know that it was not by choice that I left the area.

If there is anything you need, information, or resources you would like me to direct you to, please let me know. I will continue to try to assist all of the wonderful people of beat 15X as best I can from my new assignment.

Hopefully I can return to the area at the next watch change and serve the area once again as a Patrol Officer. Take care and best wishes.

Block Party review

http://oaklandlocal.com/blogs/2010/06/parkway-funk-brings-people

By David Kim

It was old school fun under a blazing sun on Saturday as more than 300 community members showed up in support of the Town Funk Summer Block Party near the Parkway Theater.

Neighbors partied and danced in the street, as part a celebration of their community and the inauguration of the new Funktown Arts District. It was the first time since the Parkway Speakeasy theatre closed that Park Blvd has seen this much action.

Park Blvd. was filled with fantastic fun which included live hip-hop and reggae music from a range of artists, free food for everyone, and a massive jumper for the kids.

Midway through the event, the dance area was taken over by dozens of colorful scrapper bikes, which had paraded all the way from 73rd Ave, Led by Baby Champ, "the Original Scrapper Bike King," the crew proceeded to perform several scrapper bike anthems.

Neighborhood artists Rocker T and Jern Eye culminated the afternoon after DJ Zeph tore the house down with an incredible Michael Jackson tribute mash-up that had the crowd dancing.

The party, part of an ongoing effort to unite the local community and Oakland at large, was a collaboration between a diverse group of local organizations and churches which included; Regeneration, Trybe, Lake Merritt Business Association, Lake Neighbors, Roots and Branches, Woodys Cafe, Lotus Bloom; Beats, Rhymes and Life, and Community Rejuvenation Project.

Many at the event said the party was a fantastic demonstration of community love.

"I think it's good for Oakland. The city needs more events like this," said Lisa O’Brien, a parent of one of the Future Shock dancers, who also performed.

Besides good music and food, the party also featured a live aerosol painting on Yuens Automotive by the Community Rejuvenation Project, which has recently begun transforming the neighborhood with several murals in the immediate vicinity of the event. The new murals have led the community to rename the area "the Funktown Arts District," depicted in colorful images of musicians and artists on the automotive shop. Around the corner, guest artist and San Diego master muralist, Mario Toredo, painted a large colorful portrait.

"The Community Rejuvenation Project believes that the solution to neighborhood blight and neglect is community involvement and engagement, through cultural artwork and community celebration. The Town Funk block party is a perfect example of this," said Desi W.O.M.E, the program's founder and director.

The Community Rejuvenation Project (CRP) cultivates healthy communities through beautification, education, and celebration. The group achieves this mission through experiential programs that promote professional development, artistic and cultural expression, and community empowerment.

CRP recently inaugurated the Martin Luther King Cultural Corridor with a series of murals between West Grand Ave. and 28th St. on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The group is currently completing a large mural on Mills Grocery at Seminary and MacArthur and transforming an abandoned lot next to the wall into a community garden with local high school students.

Oaklandnet.com

Hi Lake Neighbors...

If you go to Oaklandnet.com, you can see any new info on news and events regarding Oakland -- it is the city's webite. They also have an option for email updates by category that you may find worth signing onto. Just FYI...

Keep aware that the Mehserle trial in LA is now in jury deliberation (starting Friday afternoon) -- keep alternate routes home planned if you are away on the day they reach a verdict. The OPD is in their Mobile Field Force Response format until this passes.

As you know the cut of 80 of our police officers has been decided on already and pink slips have been handed out. There is another cut of an additional 120 (!!!!) in the immediate works and we have to do everything we can to stop this. A few of us are working on strategy -- please send your ideas and knowledge so we can handle this as efficiently and as completely as we are able!

Sasha
PS: The overview of our meeting Tuesday will follow in a day or 2! I just wanted to get this part out ASAP!

June Neighborhood mtg 6/6 at G17

And the June Lake Neighbors Meeting is also our Lake Neighbors Garden Work Day and Potluck BBQ!
Sunday, June 6, @ Garden 17 4pm.
Meet at the Garden on E 17th to do a little more beautification.
It would be great to paint a sign as well as paint the black pots in the garden, so bring paints, brushes, scrap wood and some creativity.
Also, if you'd like to add more plants/pots, bring those too!
We'll do the best with what we have.

5:30. We'll start grilling! It's pot luck, so bring a side dish to share or something to put on the grill. If you have a grill, let me know and we might use it too! This is social time, meet a new neighbor, catch up with old friends, plan your next rafting trip, what ever!! BRING YOUR OWN: Chair, plate, fork, glass. No one person is hosting so no one person is responsible for these things. We all live close enough to walk home and wash our own dish. :-)

6:30-730 We'll sit down and have our monthly meeting right there in the garden! Afterwards, stay and hang out as long as you like. Rain plan: The Bermans house accross the street, hosted by Betsy and Nico.
It's not mandatory, but RSVP's are helpful for planning. :-)

FIRST…our next several meetings (there are a few changes!):

JUNE 6th (Sunday 6:30pm)- Lake Neighbors Mtg...SPECIAL LOCATION will be our "annual meeting BBQ" and will be on East 17th street between 3rd and 4th Avenues at Garden 17 (AKA: G17)! This is just one block from Luckys.

This meeting we really just focused in on the Alternative Currency Project that is being run by Devin who has done a lot of work on looking into this for our neighborhood and he gave us a very good presentation that sought to orient and educate us so we can make some decisions as a group to begin some trials to see how this can work here.

He began by showing a video (I think this is on our website, by the way). We can take this in stages and start use of this now in a way that can allow for it to grow. Later if it is established it is a possible back up that will allow us to still function should an emergency arise.

There are 3 major methods of Alt. Currency out there being used successfully by other communities/neighborhoods. They are 1) Ithaca Hours Model which is one of the longest running methods (several decades) and is roughly 1hr = 1 bill = $10 avg (more or less)....then there is 2) A model used by 4th Corner Exchange where we could either use physical bills with serial numbers or keep a database tracking virtual currency earned by trade or work/service done...and then there is 3) Bernal method -- this is most easily started because it is a sticker that is put on existing mainstream currency that is recognized by participating local businesses etc. that can be spent in our community...

We talked about the downsides and risks around costs and also about counterfeit -- etc...but the trust factor and change in paradigm and philosophy here is so different from mainstream that it tends to happen much less it is not hoarded. We have to structure it in such a way that it keeps flowing within this neighborhood and doesn't get sent out and lost to our "flow" here...also being electronic will be problematic in a serious emergency/blackout.

No set decisions were established at this early point -- next steps are polling people and local businesses to see who is "in" -- we need a critical mass of about 30 or 40 to have a good start. It was said we would have to have a concise explanation on what we use to increase the success of it.

Please contact Devin (you can email me and I'll forward it to him) with your interest and ways you would like to participate! He's accumulating a growing group now...this could really happen. Pretty interesting and exciting -- and not to mention a big undertaking on Devin's part -- thank you Devin!!!!! Nico is joining in with him to help. One other person is considering it also.

That's mostly it for the moment on that -- we had Andy join in as our new OPD contact. It was noted that it has been some time since we have had them join in on a meeting and that it would be a good idea to have them come to our next meeting or one soon after.

minimizing risk of home invasions

Hi Lake Neighbors...

I got an offer from a neighbor (Rachel B) to summarize suggestions she found for minimizing risk of home invasions on Cleveland Heights Neighborhood listserve and here it is below (Thank you, Rachel!).

These do happen around here at times (there have been several in the last year or so), this is not to create fear, but we do have to be aware. So, in the spirit of having our heads up and out of the sand and committed to making it safe and great here we also are doing SO much great positive stuff in the neighborhood which is a big part of it. Our 2010 kick-off outdoor movie went off last night without a hitch -- even though it was SUPER cold!!! -- people stuck it out and as it did last year I think the crowd will grow with each movie event. We will try this in about a month...stay tuned and make an effort to be there because it is a great way to meet eachother and it is really fun. Send movie suggestions. There are so many more things going on -- join in, check the website and also pitch your own ideas of things to make happen.

Okay...read below...

Subject: Recent Home Invasion on 600 Block of Athol Avenue

(Suggestions) Here they are....

Time: They want to move fast, so anything that slows them down (only locks keep honest men out). So search out weakness (non deadbolted doors, poorly secured windows), gates, etc. Make it tough for them to break in and then to find and remove what they might like.

Light: They don’t want to be seen. At night lights activated by photo-eye (activates when dark) on all sides of house - including porch and driveway, and timed lights insight house. As reported, it seems very typical that burglars want to get into the backyard where they are not seen, so this seems to be the most important are to double up defenses. Note: people broke into a house at night while owner gone by turning off power at circuit box, so make sure this is locked and secured as best as possible. Though a burglar could cut the lock, it will at least slow them down (Time) and make your house a less appealing target.

Noise: Alarms, etc. By making windows and doors tough to open, that leaves burglars with more drastic and more likely noise options for breaking in..busting doors, broken glass etc..

Don't rely on just one tactic for protecting your home but use layers of defense. By making burglars get past through hurdle after hurdle, you will at least slow them down and complicate their intended job.

And then combining all these redundant protections with great neighbors that keep an eye out for each others property, we have a fighting chance against burglary.

Don't leave tables, chairs, and ladders in your backyard. They can be used to access higher windows. Store them in your basement, garage, or tool shed.

Alarm System Signs might help too, even if you don't have an alarm. You can also buy realistic empty alarm boxes and mount them on your house to make it look like you do have an alarm system.

Put a deadbolt lock in one room or closet in your house, and put your valuables in there when you have workmen over to work in your house.

Put a Beware of Dog sign on front door (even if your dog is a mellow . Right before going to bed, put something in front of your doors on the inside; something that would make noise if the door banged into or something that a burglar would trip over. Always make sure there is a light on in the back of the house and front porch. Bring phone to bed, so can call 911 if you hear someone breaking in. Have pepper spray.

If you are a recent victim of residential burglary (forced or unforced entry) or home invasion robbery (indeed very rare but unnerving), you can get a free Security Inspection from Neighborhood Watch. Contact Brenda Ivey, bivey@oaklandnet. com, 238-3091

emergency numbers to remember

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Oakland Police
Emergency: (510) 777-3211
Non-Emergency: (510) 777-3333

Greetings,

I live on the 600 block of Athol Avenue. My friend and neighbor across the street asked me to let everyone know what happened this morning. Two men with knives broke into her house while she and her 7 year old son were sleeping, around 5am. One of them held her while the other took her laptop, family jewelry, and bank card -- all right in front of her son.

They managed to get in through a tiny window on the side of the house which was cracked for air. An important fact to note is they broke in on the side of the house that is next to a house that the neighbors recently moved out of -- they knew that no one would hear them because the house next door was empty.

Please be more aware of keeping your windows closed at night and your doors always locked. Also, some people may not be aware that when calling from a cell phone, 911 gets routed to the CHP somewhere else. Remember to dial the following emergency number if using a cell phone: (510) 777-3211. You may want to program it into your cell phone.

It's okay to call the non-emergency line if you see something out of the ordinary. If you see something like a person just sitting in the driver's seat of a car that isn't one of your neighbors, that is a red flag. OPD's advice is always to be aware of your surroundings, say hello to your neighbors, know who lives on your block, and look out for each other.

Thanks and take care.

Mtg Notes - April 18

The minutes from the meeting!!!!
(sorry! my pile was just too high, so it took a minute to get this out to you all!)

The format we are using now in meetings (which covers everything well) is reports from present members who are leads on projects & here is what was shared. We always try to keep our meeting to a tight hour, so we were not able to get to everyone, but mostly.

ALTERNATIVE CURRENCY PROJECTDevin is planning to do a presentation about what this is and what it means and what it can be in our next meeting on May 11th. We have also put an explanation to start with on our website (YES! WE HAVE A WEBSITE! see below) He is working on a flyer to give out to local businesses for their participation...much more to report on that after next meeting! He is really motivated and has already received some specific offerings to post from some of our neighbors -- if you have not already sent him info on what you have to share or offer for trade, make sure you do soon!OUTREACHWe have a GREAT colorful postcard now, designed and printed by Carol and Brittany and it is beautiful. This has been distributed to any neighbor wanting to pass out our info and if you are interested you can contact me (Sasha) or get some at any meeting or event.

COMMUNITY GARDENS UPDATE
· Star Apple Edible Gardens is consulting with Funktown.
· We are starting neighborhood improvement project on E.17th in the abandoned house’s open garage (begun as a neighbor work crew earlier in the day prior to the meeting for Earth Day) and we are calling it G17 (garden 17!)…feel free to add plants or decorations or get on the watering list. The hardworking Earthday crew of neighbors was so much great and skilled comraderie that started off at Funktown (they even built stairs?!) and ended at Garden 17…then onto the meeting. Being outside and working right on the block is a great way to connect up and meet other neighbors passing by – we now have the postcard to hand out also.
· CSA (produce) Boxes are now available arranged by Betsy from Shooting Star CSA… About the Farm: You may have met Lily and Mat at FRESH. They donated one of those big beautiful boxes to the raffle. Check out their story at http://www.shootingstarcsa.com/About the CSA (Community Support Agriculture): A 28-week long seasonal adventure featuring the best tasting varieties of produce delivered to your neighborhood. Everything in your box is grown on Shooting Star's farm in Fairfield, and is organically grown. The 2010 season begins the week of May 24th and goes through the week of November 30th. Pick-up is expected be at Regen's Community Center, 215 E 15th, on Tuesdays, from approx. 4pm - 8pm. Membership rates are: Full Harvest Season, 28 weeks, $616 ($22/wk,Can be made in two payments of $308), Half Harvest Season, 14 weeks, $322 ($23/wk), 4 week sessions, $96 ($24/wk). Betsy is organizing a list of half-shares (split a box with someone) and CSA subs (when full time members go on vacation). Contact betsy.tyler@gmail.com or 803-566-1771 & let her know if you're interested in sharing or subbing. Visit the Farm: Shooting Star will kick of the season with an Open House and Strawberry Short Cake afternoon on Saturday, May 15, 2pm-5pm. Talk to Betsy if your interested in visiting the farm! (invite & flyer are attached to this email!)

EVENTS UPDATE
Our next OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT has been changed to May 8th! This is a Saturday and it begins at sundown. Get there early and hang out because it is a lot of fun. BRING CHAIRS AND LAYERS in case it gets cold. We are still taking ideas about which movie to show – currently in the lead is “The Fabulous Mr. Fox.” Spread the word, bring all your friends.

WEBSITE UPDATE
Yes, it is true…we have a webmaster now – Carol C. She has designed a great website (her wife Brittany gets a lot of the shared credit for the huge amount of work they have both done to make this come to fruition so rapidly). Please take a look at it and give your feedback. Deadline to really finalize it will be May 15th. Also, we are looking for translators who can give the translated words to Carol and we can create pages for other neighbors here whose primary language is not English (we already have a person able to do a Spanish version). We will figure out how to change how we give info on the website vs. email and all that, so stay tuned and give your ideas.

HEALING THE CAUSE
This team did not get time to report – but is onto some great leads and will report in the next meeting.

Hope everyone is great. Keep contacting this group in any way you are able with your thoughts and needs and ideas and really try to show up and spread the word because it is working. The efforts to make things safer here are underway but are still very much needed, so stay awake , strong and positive.

Much Friendship,
Sasha

MTG: 3-30-10 Urban Roots Guest

Hi Lake Neighbors...

Really nice meeting yesterday -- it was fun to be there. Our neighbors are all such great people. ANYWAY...our next meeting will be on a Sunday
(every meeting always now at 6:30pm) potluck at 1704 3rd Ave RIGHT across the street from Lucky's and RIGHT next to Walgreens on the corner
of E. 17th Street). That will be on April 18th.

Onto what we talked about...

We had a great guest (thank you Betsy!) -- his name is Jonathan Gomwalk with Urban Roots, which is an organization that is helping to get the community
set up with their own sources of fresh, organic produce in a way that is easily sustainable and requires little space. He presented their
garden boxes (which are called Earthboxes) there are classes, or you can contact him directly. The info follows the end of this letter and I have
also attached page 1 and 2 of their course outline FYI. The boxes are watered one time a week, the water is kept on the bottom of the box and
is wicked in to the plants as they need. No yard is needed and they are high producing. We an order the boxes from them at cost ($45 for the
box only -- instead of the $60 or 70 that may be in stores. The other things you will require most likely will add up to $30 --- they will set you up
for a service fee in addition to that). Jon is also a Lake Neighbor.

We have succeeded in broadening our work as a neighborhood group by breaking our actions down into 3 categories (these 3 categories address safety
and improvement on direct levels and also on causal levels). A description of these categories and the people signed on to these are at the end of this
email FYI. The team lead's present at this meeting that had news to report were the following...

Besty & Skye (Events): started group discussion about how to go forward with our Earth Day project for the abandoned house/garage on E. 17th
and an email will follow soon to the larger group with details. Keep your calendar marked for 4/18 which is the day we are planning to do something
together there -- this is the same day as our next meeting. ALSO...we have an outdoor movie coming up the end of April -- we need ideas about
the movie to show! Email them in!

The Engineering (formerly called tech) team reported their progress/planning around installing the new antenna/repeater in the new location for
Lakenet...stay tuned.

Garden update (by compost queen Skye) just one point to mention this week which is that anyone wanting to contribute compost there, just email
her (yogaskya@gmail.com) or Betsy (betsy.tyler@gmail.com) for access and any of your food scraps are greatly appreciated.

Dave K reported on his great motivation to muralize one particular apartment building and he will be reaching out to Matlena (who is also on the
Neighborhood Improvement via Arts category for Lake Neighbors). It was noted that once this is done it can be an example to show to other buildings
in the neighborhood who may be interested in beautifying the area and deterring tagging.

Brittney added into the Outreach group.
Raymond is in the Healing the Cause category
Jon has also joined into the Healing the Cause category -- most especially because we are reaching out to youth from Oakland High and their involvement with Urban ROOTS
would be a powerful fit.

There was also a mention that if we look into tax breaks form the city for a Parkway plan that it may facilitate something finally coming into that space again...? We have someone who would be willing to help pursue this if the city is open to that. We need to check in with Pat Kernighan and also with the iliketheparkway's Peter Prado about this thought, too.

OKAY...Thank you everybody -- see you all at the next meeting and out in the neighborhood a lot.

Much Friendship,
Sasha

HERE IS THE LETTER DESCRIBING WHAT Urban ROOTS DOES...

> the worldwide Grow Your Own (GYO) Movement. Yes, spring has sprung and the time is ripe for growing those
> delicious summer vegetables - even if you live in an apartment and don't know the difference between potting mix
> and soil. You can grow your own for pennies in comparison to buying organics at the supermarket.
>
> The simplest method of growing organic foods - even if you don't have access to dirt and a yard - is the EarthBox,
> AND attending our 3-hour workshop to learn everything you'll need to get started right away. EarthBoxes are known
> as "self-watering" planters because of its own reservoir. As a result, it conserves more than 60 to 80 percent of the
> water as traditional in-ground farming. The boxes are a 1990s invention by farmers in Florida who were concerned by
> the amount of water and contaminants used in their crops. (I've had my boxes for seven years and the same potting
> mix for three seasons and they're still in great shape!)
>
> This patented system has found homes in Africa, Latin America and major cities across the globe because it:
> 1. Conserves large amounts of water
> 2. Retains a clean, organic growing environment
> 3. Requires no preparation of the soil (since you only have to place the planter on top) and
> 4. Produces as much as 50 percent more yield than conventional methods - all in a box measuring 30" long x 14"
> wide and 12" high or less than three cubic feet.
>
> Because it is fully enclosed, you can place it on any level surface. For the most part, the only maintenance you'll need
> to do is watering and harvesting your bounty. Even fertilization is done just once: when you plant because the
> nutrition is kept within the box.
>
> So if you're tired of paying more money on your grocery bills and want to take control of what goes into your foods,
> then sign up for our Urban ROOTS workshop. The last Thursday evening session takes place on April 1 from 6pm to
> 9pm. The first of several Saturday classes will start on April 3 from noon to 3pm. Both workshops will take place at
> the Oakland Housing Authority Community Room on the 2nd floor at 935 Union Street (corner of 10th St.) in West
> Oakland. (Future workshops will take place at another location to be named later.)
>
> The workshop fee is still only $10 and goes to support our social enterprise working to bring more organic micro-
> farms to low income Oakland communities. To reserve your seat, please call: 510.655.1304 and leave your name,
> number of people attending and date you'd like to attend.

Oakland Running Festival

OAKLAND RUNNING FESTIVAL

On March 28, thousands of runners will hit to the streets of Oakland to participate in the Inaugural Oakland Running Festival. This new event features the first marathon in our city in more than 25 years, a half-marathon, four-person team relay, 5k and a kids' fun run. In addition, there will be a free health and fitness expo and celebration village.

The course will circumvent its way through our fair city and will give runners a unique view of Oakland.

If you aren't a runner, you can still participate as a volunteer or stand out on the course and cheer on the runners as they run past you.

This event will be a boon to our city's economy and is great way for citizens to show their pride in Oakland.

For more information on this event AND A LIST OF STREET CLOSURES please visit www.oaklandmarathon.com.

FunkTown Farm - Welcomes SPRING

Hi Farmers,
Just wanted to send a quick note with some updates of life on the farm.

FUNK TOWN NEWSLETTER

WATERING SCHEDULE:
The watering schedule is full (thanks guys!) Watering volunteers should have gotten an invite to see the google calendar with their assignments. I'm trying to figure out how to get it to send you each a reminder based on who's spoda' do what, but I'm not that advanced on google yet....

SATURDAY WORK SCHEDULE:
Jess will be at the Farm to host an abbreviated work schedule from around 10am to noon.
(NOTE: IF YOU ARE FREE CONSIDER ATTENDING THE COMPOSTING WORKSHOP INSTEAD OF GOING TO THE FARM THIS SATURDAY)

Some things that need to be done on the farm are:
Turn Skye's compost note into a wooden sign. See Jess for wood and paints or a permanent marker.
Turn the Compost. We want to make sure it gets movement at every level, even when it's low.
Add sticks to the compost. While it's low, we want a good base of woody things that brake down slowly and allow air to pass through. Help Jess collect the pile of sticks that the city left near my house.
Plant the new flowers. Jess can help you figure out where.

COMPOSTERS NEEDED:
Skye Livingston is the new Compost Queen! She needs a team to help her manage it so good dirt is made faster. Please contact skye (yogaskye@gmail.com) if you'd like to be on the "composting team."

COMPOST CLASS ON SATURDAY:
Skye recommends this to ALL gardeners who add to our compost or any other compost. Consider attending the class like volunteering at FunkTown (since it's the same time this week) And, its FREE!

Compost Workshop - no registration required
Saturday, March 27 – Basic Backyard Composting
10 AM – 12 Noon Bay-Friendly Demonstration Garden, Lakeside Park, 666 Bellevue Ave., Oakland ($3/car parking fee)
Learn how to make gardening gold – compost –right in your own backyard using plant trimmings and food scraps. This hands on class covers all the how-to’s of building, trouble shooting and harvesting compost.

Here's video and pictures: Http://catinvasion.blogspot.com
